Argo

We don’t often go to the majority of movies available this  day and age. That is the ones that feature incessant violence or gratuitous sex. Still a few good ones come along. This year we’ve already seen Lincoln, Les Miserables and The Life of Pi.  Last week it was Ben Afflecks  Argo.

The plot is simple. In 1979, a small group is Americans flee the American Embassy under siege by Iranian revolutionaries.  They manage to seek and obtain shelter in the Canadian Embassy. There, trapped, they hope to be rescued.  An ingenious and bizarre plot is undertaken to bring them out in the face of great danger. The Canadians are more than helpful. The rest, as they say,  is history. In fact, it’s all really true.  This movie was nominated for Academy Awards. And like Lincoln and the Life of Pi the nomination is well deserved.

Quartet is a decent film without violence. It can be appreciated by those of us a certain age.

Thanks for the review. Eric and I have been thinking about going to see it this weekend.

Loved Lincoln and Les Mis. Haven't seen Pi yet.

Rented Argo the other evening, very good film. Some of the footage at the beginning appeared to be from the actual event. Affleck is a very good actor, and seems to pick good roles.

Now, nearly 40 years later, Iran is as unstable a nation as ever, and the 'mid east problems' still seem insoluble.

Haven't seen Pi. Or, Argo. Though I've heard rave reviews for both of them.

I've heard it's a good movie. I think it's sitting in my Amazon cart!

I've been waiting for the movie to come out in Redbox. I saw a news report about the Oscar-nominated movies on historical events and how they change facts for dramatic effect. They said that in Argo the cars chasing the plane across the runway as it takes off at the end was pure fiction. They said the torture scenes in Zero Dark Thirty were also inaccurate. In the movie Lincoln, they mistakenly show that Connecticut cast two votes against the 13th amendment when they actually voted for it.

My husband and I go about twice a month to see movies in the theater so we saw all the Academy Award nominess except Amour and Django Unchained. I agreed with almost all the Academy Award winners, although I think Argo is not as good as Lincoln, Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook, and Les Miserables. It was very good as have been many of the movies this year (unlike the dismal selection last year). After Argo concluded, everyone stood up and cheered at the end of Argo, feeling a lot of pride and patriotism together (so rare these days).
