Arrival

Mrs. T. wants to go to a movie. "What's showing," she says.  I dunno  but I'll check. I did.  "Mostly the usual trash and a few kids shows. Oh and a sci fi that Time says is "for adults."  " I know you don't like those monster mash ups but maybe...."  Out of the goodness of her heart she agreed to give it a try. :) We went.
Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.
Cutting straight to the chase Arrival  definitely was for adults. Meaning no shoot em ups and bombs going off everywhere. There is plenty of suspense and more than a little tension. Amy Adams is quiet, afraid and strong, clearly the only person who can  ultimately figure out what's going on. I can't believe I'm writing this but Ms. Adams star turn is definitely in the Meryl Streep category. Also, not as a turn off, but I must admit the theme  that communication between alien  races was nigh impossible and potentially catastrophic brought to mind Republicans and Democrats during the recent horrific election season.  But I digress. It's an interesting and thoughtful movie...:)

I wouldn't have thought this would appeal to me, but your review makes it seem like it might.

I never go to the movies these days but this film sounds good. Did Mrs T like it?

I just read recently that Amy Adams has become a legitimate leading lady. As you say, Meryl Streep caliber, was the impression I got.

I have to confess I'd never heard of her. I don't know what that says. She's never heard of me. I know what that says. Then again, she could have come across me while reading your blog.

I have heard about this one. I do enjoy sci fi and this looked like one I'd like. Sadly not having a nearby theater, I will have to wait for the DVD.

Hi,
I have seen Amy Adams in other movies and have liked her acting. Your review of Arrival is making me want to go see it. ;-) What was it rated? R or PG 13?

I didn't note the rating but I'd rate it G. No blood or sex. Some tension...;)But if you don't like aliens that look like foggy octopuses look out!

I was wondering how this was. Might be a good rental when we are looking for something we'd both enjoy. Thanks for the review!

Hi Again,
I just had to come back and tell you. Amy Adams stars with Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia. :-)

Have you ever watched the above movie?

Have liked Amy Adams since seeing her play a cartoon movie princess come-to-life in "Enchanted" back in 2007. Her acting range, like Meryl Streep's, is amazing. She has a lovely singing voice.

Yep, Adams was good in "Julie and Julia" too, with Streep playing famous chef Julia Child.

We saw it, It was quite entertaining. I am not usually a fan of sci-fi but this was a bit more cerebral.

I love sci fi and hate action movies. Will check out this one, thanks, As for communications....one of my favourite Far Side cartoons shows a bunch of nerds with clipboards standing around a pool with dolphins. Says one, bewildered: "They're making those abla espanol sounds again." We might start by trying to engage with our fellow earthlings, elephants, sea mammals, and those dastardly clever octopi. Good practice.
