Schooling In The Black Hills
In the gorgeous Black Hills of South Dakota we recently ran across a school as they used to be. Readin. Written and Rithmatic. Take a look....
And, of course, it didn't hurt that the setting was gorgeous. Though I'm sure the children always paid attention, were well behaved and above average.....
Pretty, yes, but can you imagine how cold that place was during Winter? And sitting on those benches, oh geez, I am so glad I was born in 1948 instead of 1888. Wish it had been 2008...well maybe 1998. Not sure I could read when I was five years old.
In reading some family history, it was fun to read where my Great Grandpa and a couple of his neighbors built the "school house", then found a teacher to bring the three Rs to their kids. The Schoolhouse still stands as a small home, hopefully not as air-y looking as this one is.

LOVE that school! Ah, the good ol' days - where a kid was actually expected to learn to read, apply themselves, and could do a math problem. Amazing.
Wonderful clicks! I am so jealous abt the one which is in your header. Gorgeous!
I used to think those one-room school teachers had it rough. Then I look around at today's youth and change my mind.
Now, that is a rustic school. Very interesting to think of how it used to be for some.
